Bamburi Cement has signed a $250 million (about KSh 32 billion) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract with China’s Sinoma CBMI Construction Co. to build a new clinker factory in Kwale County, the company said on Monday.
The greenfield, 1.6 million-tonnes-per-year clinkerisation plant will be built in Matuga, along Kenya’s coast, and is expected to more than double Bamburi’s clinker capacity to 2.6 million tonnes annually and raise cement output to about 4 million tonnes.
Bamburi, Kenya’s leading cement maker and a member of Tanzania-based Amsons Group, said the project would reduce reliance on imported clinker, cut foreign exchange costs and stabilise cement supply as demand rises from infrastructure projects.
“This new clinker line will secure long-term clinker self-sufficiency, improve production consistency and support Kenya’s growing infrastructure needs,” Bamburi Cement Chief Executive Mohit Kapoor said at the signing ceremony.
The plant will use energy-efficient and lower-emission technologies, including alternative fuels such as agricultural waste and municipal solid waste sourced from the coastal region, Bamburi said.
Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said the investment aligns with President William Ruto’s 10-year infrastructure development plan, which targets large-scale spending on roads, rail, ports and other strategic projects.
Construction of the Matuga plant is expected to create jobs during both the building and operational phases and boost economic activity in Kwale County and the wider coastal region.
Sinoma CBMI, part of China National Building Material Group (CNBM), is a global cement engineering firm with projects across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
