Five Kenyan Students Complete Huawei’s Seeds for the Future 2025 Tech Program

Five Kenyan university students have returned home after participating in an intensive week-long technology immersion in China through Huawei’s flagship Seeds for the Future 2025 program.

Representing Kenya were Shem Machii Ngunjiri (Dedan Kimathi University of Technology), Sophy Cherono Rop (United States International University–Africa), Huldah Mwihaki Kaura (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology), Mungai Erick Gachuhi (Moi University), and Samuel Ochor Ogeno (University of Nairobi).

Reflecting on the experience, participant Samuel Ochor Ogeno said, “A seed starts in the dark, buried in the soil—unseen, uncertain, unimportant, but full of potential. With time, care, water, air, and the right environment, it sprouts, grows, and eventually becomes something impactful. Thank you, Huawei ‘Seeds for the Future,’ for providing the fertile ground for our minds to flourish.”

Launched in 2008, Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program aims to develop local ICT talent, bridge the digital divide, and foster global collaboration. Since 2014, dozens of Kenyan students have benefited from the program, contributing to the nation’s expanding digital innovation sector.

The initiative, held from July 21 to 25, gathered top university students from across the world for a deep dive into emerging ICT technologies and cross-cultural exchange.

The Kenyan participants joined peers from countries including Brazil, Namibia, Portugal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Madagascar in a comprehensive program that featured hands-on training in 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, and Smart City solutions. Students also toured Huawei’s advanced exhibition halls, learned about smart government innovations in Longgang, and visited leading drone manufacturer DJI’s headquarters.

The week concluded with a closing ceremony, where students received certificates of completion in recognition of their participation and achievements.

Huldah Mwihaki Kaura, another delegate, described the program as “an unforgettable journey,” noting that “interacting with global experts and fellow students expanded our minds and deepened our understanding of how innovation can drive tangible change.”

Michael Kamau, Manager of Huawei ICT Academy Kenya, praised the students, stating, “These bright minds represent the future of Kenya’s digital landscape. Through Seeds for the Future, we’re proud to equip them with the skills, exposure, and global networks they need to lead Africa’s tech-driven growth.”
