Absa Bank Kenya has appointed Yusuf Omari as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, formally ending his stint as the bank’s interim CEO and putting a veteran executive with more than two decades of banking experience at the helm.
Omari takes up the position with immediate effect after receiving the required regulatory and internal approvals. He has served as interim managing director and CEO since July 1, 2026, following his tenure as Absa Bank Kenya’s chief financial officer, a position he had held since 2009.
His appointment gives Absa Kenya a CEO with extensive experience across finance, treasury, risk management, governance, strategy, sustainability and business transformation.
During his time as CFO, Omari was involved in efforts to improve the bank’s financial performance and cost efficiency, optimise capital and support the expansion of its corporate and investment banking, business banking and consumer banking businesses.
He also played a role in the bank’s digital transformation, ecosystem banking and sustainability initiatives.
Mohammed Nyaoga, Chairman of Absa Bank Kenya, said Omari’s experience across the bank and understanding of the Kenyan market made him well positioned to lead the lender.
“Yusuf’s appointment reflects his proven ability to lead, deliver sustainable growth and create long-term value,” Nyaoga said.
The appointment comes as banks across Kenya continue to invest in digital banking, payments, ecosystem partnerships and technology as competition for customers increasingly extends beyond traditional branch-based banking.
Saviour Chibiya, Regional Executive for East Africa at Absa Group, described Omari as an accomplished leader who had made a significant contribution to the business.
“We have every confidence in Yusuf as he takes on the leadership of Absa Bank Kenya,” Chibiya said.
Omari said his immediate focus would be on building on the bank’s existing foundation, deepening customer relationships, accelerating sustainable growth and strengthening its competitiveness.
“Absa Bank Kenya has a strong foundation, an exceptional team and an important role to play in supporting Kenya’s economic growth and development,” Omari said.
He added that the bank would continue investing in its people and capabilities as it seeks to strengthen its position in the Kenyan market.
Omari holds a degree in Economics and a Master of Business Administration. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya and completed the Advanced Management Programme delivered by Strathmore and IESE Business School.
Absa Bank Kenya is part of Absa Group, one of Africa’s major financial services groups, with operations across 12 African markets and representative offices in New York, London and Beijing.
