Bamburi Cement wins triple honours for driver safety, innovation

Bamburi Cement has won three first-place honours at Kenya’s Road Safety Excellence Awards 2026, highlighting its investment in transport risk management across a distribution network spanning more than 1,000 drivers and 25 transport partners.

The cement maker won the Driver Safety & Wellness, Road Safety Champion and Road Safety Innovation categories at the awards organised by the Automobile Association of Kenya in partnership with the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.

For manufacturers reliant on road transport, safety management extends beyond regulatory compliance to the oversight of contractors, protection of personnel and continuity of product deliveries. Bamburi’s programme seeks to embed safety standards across its own operations and third-party transport network.

Its measures include a Digital Driver Pass, in-vehicle monitoring systems, a ban on night driving and audited defensive-driving training.

Bamburi also won the innovation award for its Transporter Safety Maturity Audit Tool, which assesses transporters across five road-safety pillars using a weighted scoring system. The company said 16 transporters had been profiled using the tool, which has also been applied to rail operators.

Unlike a conventional pass-or-fail checklist, the system categorises transporters according to their level of safety maturity, giving the company a structured framework for assessing contractors and identifying areas for improvement.

The approach places transport oversight within a broader operational risk framework, where incidents can affect employees, logistics partners, delivery schedules and business continuity. However, Bamburi has not disclosed the programme’s impact on accident rates or transport costs.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we remain committed to strengthening our safety practices and ensuring that every journey is undertaken with the highest regard for human life,” said Mohamed Kassim, Bamburi Cement’s supply chain director.

The awards recognise the company’s driver welfare measures, transport safety management and use of structured assessments to evaluate safety performance across its logistics network.

Bamburi Cement is a member of Amsons Group and has operated in the region for 70 years. Amsons has interests in cement and concrete, construction, transport, flour and logistics across Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Congo, Zambia and Mozambique.
