MultiChoice Group, a Canal+ company, will cut the number of its DStv packages in Kenya to four and introduce a new entry-level offering at 750 shillings ($5.80) a month as it seeks to make its pay-TV service more accessible to consumers.
The new packages will take effect from Nov. 5, replacing the existing six-package line-up as MultiChoice responds to changing viewing habits and demand for more affordable entertainment options.
DStv Starter will cost 750 shillings a month, while DStv Select will be priced at 1,500 shillings, DStv Sports at 3,000 shillings and DStv Ultimate at 7,300 shillings, the company said.
The entry-level Starter package will offer up to 116 channels, including Maisha Magic Plus, Cartoon Network, Disney Junior, LaLiga and a new SuperSport KICKOFF channel featuring selected live matches from major football leagues, including the Premier League.
DStv Sports, priced at 3,000 shillings, will include the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, as well as WWE and UFC, while retaining the general entertainment channels available on the Select package.
The Ultimate package, at 7,300 shillings, will offer up to 180 channels and include premium sports such as Formula 1, MotoGP, cricket, rugby, ATP tennis and golf majors.
The new packages will also be available on DStv Stream at the same monthly prices as satellite subscriptions.
“This marks a defining moment in our 30-year journey in Kenya,” MultiChoice Kenya Chief Executive Officer Nzola Miranda said, describing the changes as a comprehensive review of the company’s product portfolio.
MultiChoice will also sell an HD decoder and satellite dish for 1,500 shillings, with installation costing 500 shillings, from Nov. 5.
GOtv, MultiChoice’s lower-cost terrestrial pay-TV service, will also have four packages, with prices ranging from 300 shillings for GOtv Easy to 3,000 shillings for GOtv Sports.
The company said GOtv Easy will offer 30 channels, while the Starter, Select and Sports packages will offer 47, 66 and 73 channels respectively.
The package revamp comes as MultiChoice operates under Canal+’s ownership following the French media group’s acquisition of the African pay-TV company.
MultiChoice said it would continue investing in local productions and African storytelling alongside international programming.
