Absa Names Kipchoge Financial Partner for Global Marathon Tour

Absa Bank Kenya has named Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge its Official World Tour Financial Partner, linking the lender to the athlete’s global initiative to run marathons across all seven continents.

The announcement comes two days after Kipchoge won the Melbourne Marathon in a course-record time of 2:09:10. The 41-year-old two-time Olympic champion secured his first marathon victory since 2023.

The partnership will include customer experiences, leadership conversations, digital storytelling, wellness initiatives and community programmes across Absa’s Pan-African markets, the bank said.

The financial terms and duration of the agreement were not disclosed.

Kipchoge’s global tour is built around his ambition to complete marathons on all seven continents and promote running worldwide. The initiative provides Absa with an international platform to associate its financial services with the athlete’s sporting profile and engage customers through events and digital campaigns.

Yusuf Omari, managing director and chief executive of Absa Bank Kenya, said Kipchoge’s achievements demonstrated what could be accomplished through talent, discipline and purpose.

The partnership would help the bank connect with customers, entrepreneurs and institutions pursuing their financial ambitions, Omari said.

Mwihaki Wachira, Absa Bank Kenya’s marketing and corporate affairs director, said the bank believed every individual had a story worth investing in and that the right support could help people achieve extraordinary things.

Kipchoge said he was proud to partner with Absa and described himself as a long-time customer of the bank. He said the partnership would support his ambition to promote running globally.

The collaboration will combine customer engagement with leadership discussions and community programmes, extending Absa’s presence around a global sporting initiative. The bank did not disclose targets for customer acquisition, product sales or revenue attributable to the agreement.

Absa Bank Kenya is part of Absa Group, a financial services group operating in 12 African countries, with businesses spanning personal and business banking, corporate and investment banking, and wealth management.
