Solar energy company Sun King is targeting Kenyan businesses with affordable, heavy-duty solar power systems available through its pay-as-you-go (PAYGo) financing model from $120 a month, expanding into a higher-value segment of the country’s distributed-energy market.
The company said on Thursday that its PowerHub solar inverter range now extends from 2.2 kilowatts to 30 kilowatts, allowing it to serve businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, offices and light industrial customers alongside larger households.
Customers can access the systems through Sun King’s PAYGo financing model, with monthly payments starting at KSh15,500 ($120) and a KSh22,600 ($175) down payment, the company said.
The expansion allows Sun King to target customers with larger electricity requirements and potentially higher-value transactions than its traditional household solar products.
Sun King did not disclose expected sales from the new range or revenue and profit figures for its Kenyan business.
The systems can be connected in parallel to increase total power capacity. Customers can also add battery storage and solar panels as their electricity needs grow without replacing the existing equipment, the company said.
“The latest additions to our PowerHub range take us into new territory,” Atta Arome, Sun King’s product head for solar inverter systems, said.
The systems can power equipment including water pumps, washing machines, microwaves and air conditioners, Sun King said, positioning them as an alternative to diesel generators and backup power for businesses facing grid interruptions.
Sun King has operated in Kenya since 2007 and said one in five Kenyans has access to its solar solutions. Across Africa, more than 330,000 Sun King solar products are installed every month, according to the company.
The company designs and installs the systems and provides financing, warranty and after-sales services, allowing customers to deal with a single provider throughout the life of the installation.
“Customers receive support from a single trusted provider throughout the lifetime of their system,” Victor Agandi, Sun King’s vice president for pay-as-you-go in East and Southern Africa, said.
The expanded PowerHub range is available nationwide through Sun King’s agent network, the company said.
